City to observe Veterans Day
Published 10:14am Saturday, November 10, 2012Veterans Day is Nov. 11, and schools and businesses across the city have already been memorializing the day. A few more events remain for honoring those who have given their all for America.
Saturday the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home will play host to a program put on by the Disabled American Veterans.
The program – a fundraiser for the veterans home – will include a barbecue and a car show.
The city will hold its Veterans Day program Sunday at the Charles E. Bailey Sportplex at 2 p.m.
“Mr. Jerry Martin is going to be our speaker. He’s been in service and is a very decorated soldier,” Shaw said.
Shaw said the program will also include a wreath laying ceremony for all military branches, as well as the playing of taps and a 21-gun salute.
“All those are moving experiences,” Shaw said. “We have a great program … I would encourage everyone to come out and support our veterans.”
A number of businesses will be closed Monday for Veterans Day, including:
- all city and county schools
- the Alexander City Post Office
- the courthouse (both in Dadeville and Alexander City)
- local banks (including Wells Fargo, Aliant Bank and Regions)
- Alexander City City Hall
- Dadeville City Hall
