Graveside service for Mrs. Gussie Mae Kennedy, 91, of Alexander City, will be Friday, November 9, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Hillview Memorial Park. Dr. Gerald Hallmark and Dr. Skip Lowery will officiate. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 9, 2012 from 12:30 pm to 1:30pm at Radney Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kennedy passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at Chapman Healthcare Center. She was born on September 17, 1921 in Centre, Alabama to Stanley Hamilton and Mary Lawrence Guyton. Mrs. Kennedy was married for 66 years to Hobson Kennedy. She earned her B.A. at Howard College, now Samford University, and her Master’s at Auburn University as a Reading Specialist. She worked as teacher in the Alexander City School System. She was a longtime active member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, GA’s, and was a member of WMU. Mrs. Kennedy enjoyed gardening, helping people, socializing, and traveling with her husband’s Senior Golf Group. She was also a member of the 20 Century Study Club and Delta Kappa Gamma. Mrs. Kennedy was a super homemaker, a wonderful cook, and loved her family dearly.

She is survived by her daughters, Angela Payne (Roger) of Mobile and Ouida Wright (Steve) of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Cindy Payne Byrd (Van) of Mobile, Katy Payne McCain (Eric) of Mountain Brook, Michelle Wright Hoogendam (Brian) of Houston, TX, and Richard Wright of Austin, TX; great-grandsons, Scott and David Byrd of Mobile; Drew, Carter, and William Hoogendam of Houston, TX; and Nathan and Matthew McCain of Mountain Brook.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hobson Kennedy; her parents; and sister, Wyvonia Denham.

The family would like to say a very special thank you to the caregivers at Chapman’s Healthcare Center which Mrs. Gussie called “her prelude to heaven”.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to Children’s Harbor, 1 Our Children’s Highway, Alexander City, AL 35010; First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 400, Alexander City, Alabama 35011; or Chapman Healthcare Center Benevolent Fund, 3701 Dadeville Road, Alexander City, AL 35010, for their Memorial Garden.
