Willow Point fire falls under state jurisdiction

Published 2:06pm Tuesday, November 6, 2012

The Alabama State Fire Marshal’s office is currently investigating a fire at Willow Point that occurred last Thursday.

ACFD Chief Kem Jones said that her department had completed a preliminary investigation for department use, but since the fire occurred outside the jurisdiction of ACFD, the investigation had to be turned over to the state.

The Alexander City Fire Department and Willow Point/Ourtown Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze at 1104 Willow Way East at around 1:15 p.m. ACFD firefighters said half of the home was fully involved when they arrived on the scene.

Steve Holmes, public information officer for the Alabama State Fire Marshal, confirmed that the investigation was under way.

“We can confirm that our office is investigating,” Holmes said.

Holmes expects more information to be available in a few days as marshals complete their investigation of the incident.

Firefighters on the scene believe the fire began in the garage. The fire destroyed most of the left side of the home, but firefighters said they were able to control the blaze before it spread to the right wing of the Willow Point home. The lowest level of the home was also saved, firefighters said.

The owners of the home, Ron and Marie Strag, were not home when the fire began. The couple had left the house around 30 minutes before firefighters arrived on the scene. The couple’s dog, Tasse, perished in the fire due to smoke inhalation.
