Two people were killed on Jefferson Street Friday morning in a two-vehicle accident.

Drivers in the collision were Michelle Stevens of Carver Street, who was at the wheel of a 2004 Mercury Marquis,  and Guy Joseph of Elkahatchee Road, who was driving a 2002 GMC Safari van.

“We were called at 9:29 a.m. to 941 Jefferson Street in reference to a wreck involving two vehicles – one overturned and possibly on fire,” said Lt. Randy Walters with the Alexander City Police Department. “When we arrived on scene, neither appeared to be on fire.”

Both passengers of the Mercury Marquis, Betty Godwin and Deborah Cotney, were killed in the accident. Joseph and Stevens were transported to Russell Medical Center, where Stevens was flown by life-flight to UAB. Her condition was unknown at the time of press.

Walters said the cause of the wreck is still under investigation.

“We are conducting interviews and trying to determine what caused the wreck and what could have happened,” Walters said.
