GriefShare to host Surviving Holidays seminar

Published 11:57am Friday, October 26, 2012

A GriefShare Surviving the Holidays seminar will be held Nov. 6 at Radney Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m.

“We just saw where people who have had loss in the course of the year have an especially difficult time during the holiday season,” said Larry Cummings, family services representative at Radney Funeral Home.

GriefShare is a nationwide support group for those grieving the loss of a friend or family member. After hosting one 13-week cycle of GriefShare, Cummings said they thought the Surviving the Holidays seminar would be a great community service.

“This is something that’s totally new,” Cummings said. “We’ll just see what kind of response we get.”

The seminar will provide practical strategies for making it through the holiday season.

It will feature a video providing advice from people in grief who have faced the holidays after their loss, including insights from Christian counselors, pastors and psychologists.

“Each participant will receive a book that will have a video guide in it and about 30 different readings – daily devotions and other types of articles – to support the video,” Cummings said.

According to GriefShare.org, topics discussed will include how to communicate what you are feeling during the holidays, creating a holiday plan and what emotions to expect.

Participants will also have the opportunity to share their feelings with each other, if they choose.

The seminar is free, and Cummings said it is open to anyone – not just those that Radney Funeral Home has served.

“We just want to encourage people to call and register in advance so we can make sure we’re properly prepared,” Cummings said.
