Daycare celebrates 19 years

One local daycare opened its doors in Dadeville 19 years ago today, and its owner decided to celebrate the anniversary this week.

Geneva Heard said some people asked her why she decided to celebrate on an odd year.

“Tomorrow’s not promised to us,” Heard said. “So I just decided to go ahead and celebrate.”

Heard said she keeps 23 children in different shifts throughout the day. The youngest is three months old.

“I start work at 5:30 in the morning until 11:20 at night,” Heard said. “I enjoy what I do.”

Heard began working at an existing daycare after she lost her job at Diversified Products in Opelika.

“I liked what I was doing, and I decided to open my own business,” Heard said. “I can truly say that it has been a success.”

Heard typically keeps about 12 children at a time.

“I love kids,” Heard said. “Instead of me getting older, I get younger because I act like them.”

The week of celebration included prize drawings and other special treats. Tuesday she cooked breakfast for all her parents.

Heard’s Daycare is located at 756 Fulton Street.
