Coosa win sets up Leeds match-up

Published 10:01am Tuesday, October 16, 2012

For the first time since the 2007 season, the Central-Coosa High School Cougars have won three games in a season.
Central (3-4) defeated Montevallo in Region play last Friday night 20-14 during homecoming in Hanover.
But the road won’t get any easier for Central for the duration of this season, as the Cougars will go on the road to No. 3 Leeds (6-1) Friday.
“They are just a traditional power football team,”
Central head coach Richard Bell said of Leeds, whose only loss this season was to Class 3A No. 1 Piedmont, 7-0.
“(Leeds) runs the ball really well and they play straight ahead power football.”
The Green Wave defeated Tarrant High School in Region play last week and will host the Cougars, who are currently in a tie with Tarrant for the fourth place spot out of Class 3A, Region 4.
With the run game of Leeds, Bell added that he wants his linebackers to step up and play strong for his squad Friday night.
“I want the guys across the middle of the defense to step up and make plays this week,” Bell said.
“If we are going to have a shot. We’ll have to stop the run first.”
Defensively, Central is led by linebackers Cam Bearden, Nick Harrison, Endaegaw Whetstone and Quan Benson.
Central-Coosa and Leeds are set for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday night at Homer Smiles Field in Leeds.
