Benjamin Russell High School varsity volleyball took down area rival Marbury last Thursday afternoon to get off on the right foot in area play.
With a win at area opponent Chilton County today, the No. 8 Lady Wildcats can establish themselves as the clear favorite to win the area in 2012.
Benjamin Russell has found themselves in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A rankings for the second straight week after a strong start at the Briarwood Christian School tournament and recent wins over Jeff Davis and Auburn High Schools, as well as area opponent Marbury.
Chilton County, Marbury and Benjamin Russell are the only three teams that make up the Class 5A area that they were assigned to in volleyball.
Chilton County (0-7) comes into today’s match having not won a contest all season, and only winning two games overall, one against Dadeville and one against Moody.
Results for Chilton County’s contests against Shelby County and Sylacauga last week were not posted as of yesterday afternoon.
Benjamin Russell has played a tough schedule that should bode them well in area play, facing off against Class 6A teams Homewood, Smiths Station, Thompson, Carver-Mont., Robert E. Lee, as well as the previously mentioned games against Jeff Davis and Auburn.
BRHS has also played Class 5A No. 7 Briarwood Christian, losing in the third game of the match.
Benjamin Russell and Chilton County varsity squads are set for a 6 p.m. tip off today at Chilton County High School in Clanton.
