Out-of-towners drawn to Bow Wow Luau
Published 12:04pm Tuesday, September 4, 2012The Green at Russell Crossroads got a bit furrier Saturday as many dogs and owners alike turned out for Lake Martin Animal Shelter’s Bow Wow Luau.
Though the number of pet lovers in attendance was lower than expected, shelter manager Mia Chandler said she was still pleased.
“The main thing was exposure,” Chandler said. “It’s mostly been an out-of-town crowd, so it’s neat we’re reaching new people.”
Chandler said she had one person commit to an adoption and several interested in the other dogs present.
“The dogs got to socialize, and there was some interest in some of them,” Chandler said. “Maybe we’ll get some calls.”
Chandler said it was a “gamble” to hold the event late in the season and on the first college football game weekend.
“It was fun to do off site, and the weather was perfect, though anything would be better than how it was in July,” Chandler said.
The original Bow Wow Luau event was scheduled for July but was postponed after torrential rains hit the area.
According to the Lake Martin Animal Shelter Facebook page, the silent auction brought in $1,705 for the shelter. Chandler also said she has extended the raffles for the one-year membership to Anytime Fitness, a weekend stay at Lake Martin’s Margaritaville House and a flyover of Lake Martin. Tickets are $1 each.
Chandler said funds raised will pay for the day-to-day management of the shelter.
“We still had a great time, and we still got donations to help our cause,” Chandler said.
