After rain delay, Bow Wow Luau sets new date
Published 10:53am Friday, August 31, 2012Bow Wow Luau was stopped by rain delay in July, but the family-friendly event is back on for Saturday.
Bow Wow Luau will be held at Russell Crossroads on the Green from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free, but other activities at the event will raise funds for the Lake Martin Area Animal Shelter.
“The biggest feature will be the silent auction,” said shelter director Mia Chandler. “There are 65 items and counting.”
Chandler said items in the auction have retail values from $5 to a couple hundred, ranging from baskets to artwork and gift certificates, including items for children as well as adults.
“I think that with the cooler temperatures we will actually do better in the silent auction this year than we did last year,” Chandler said.
The luau will also feature a raffle for three big prizes: a one-year membership to Anytime Fitness, a weekend stay at Lake Martin’s Margaritaville House and a flyover of Lake Martin. Each ticket is $1.
Chandler said she hopes to raise $5,000.
“I’m feeling pretty optimistic,” Chandler said. “I think that it’s attainable, even this late in the season.”
Chandler said money raised will go into the shelter’s general fund.
“The general fund covers the day-to-day invoices – phone, payroll, veterinary invoices, general supplies,” Chandler said. “The day-to-day running of the shelter is dependent on this particular fund.”
The general fund, Chandler said, is essential to allowing her to hire the staff and maintain the cleanliness and effectiveness of the shelter.
“It is very costly to maintain a shelter,” Chandler said.
Pets are welcome to the event but must be on leash, Chandler said. Dogs and puppies will be available for adoption.
The event will also feature inflatables for children and vendors, as well microchipping, QR tags for $5 and free dog tags to the first 100 dog owners.
“I think parents or families will stay a little bit longer because there are activities for them to do,” Chandler said.
