Now that’s American

This weekend’s AMPalooza drew thousands to Lake Martin Amphitheater to enjoy the tunes of the Charlie Daniels Band with guests The Vegabonds, Rexton Lee and Brent Cobb.

“I think it went great,” said Robert Gunn, events manager for Russell Lands. “It was great to have the Vegabonds back on stage again – they sounded as good as ever, maybe better than ever.

“Brent Cobb is a relative newcomer to country music but has written a lot of songs and is out pushing his own songs now,” Gunn continued. “And I’d never had a chance to hear Rexton Lee and his band, but I was really impressed. And of course, Charlie Daniels did a great job, too.”

Gunn estimated at least 2,700 people were in attendance and the weather couldn’t have been better.

“At 5:30, the sun was still up and it was still pretty warm, but after the sun went down behind the trees, the shade started working for people,” Gunn said. “We always have a nice breeze blowing at the amphitheater, and that helped. For the end of July, you couldn’t have asked for a better day.”

Event-goer Jessica Sanford described the event as “a lot of fun.”

“My favorite band was Charlie Daniels, but the Vegabonds were really great,” Sanford said. “I hadn’t heard them before this time. And Charlie’s on up there in age, but he still brought it.”

Sanford said she attended the event with about 12 friends.

“We took a few towels and laid them out, packed up the coolers and had fun,” Sanford said. “We try to support events anytime something local is going on.  It brings so many people to the community, even if it’s on the lake, and we need to support them if we want to keep having fun events.”

Gunn said the AMP is already getting geared up for the next several events.

“We’re getting ready for Obsessed this weekend and then Drive-By Truckers on Labor Day weekend,” Gunn said.
