Ministerial association, honor society team up for charity eventPublished 4:42pm Monday, June 25, 2012
For the first time, the Alexander City Area Ministerial Association and the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society will host a one-day charity event called Project Love Thy Neighbor, Saturday, July 28.
The free event will be held at Central Alabama Community College by the walking track area from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. with several free community services provided to patrons, games for children and free refreshments.
In order to put on the event, ACAMA President Mike Waldrop said they are in need of volunteers and donations.
“Right now we’re trying to get licensed hairdressers who will do free haircuts, eye doctors to do free eye screenings, dentists to do free dental screenings, medical persons who can do free blood pressure checks, and if anyone would like to volunteer their time, they can contact us as well,” Waldrop said.
Waldrop said monetary donations are also welcomed to help pay for the two trucks from the East Alabama Food Bank for food distribution.
Anybody that has any donations or would like to find out how they can help can call River of Life Worship Center at 256-329-9593.
Waldrop said during the event there will be people helping patrons fill out resumes and helping with college assistance.
“Someone from Allegiance Staffing and some personnel from Onin Staffing will also be there for job opportunities,” Waldrop said.
In conjunction with the event, Waldrop said GAP Fellowship Church will be hosting its annual Youth Explosion Service from 3-6 p.m.
“Rev. (Dwayne) Golightly has been putting this on for years, and we just thought it would be nice to make a whole day out of it. So they’re kind of two separate things but working together as well,” Waldrop said.
Waldrop said the Youth Explosion Service would include a message given by Golightly, door prizes, pizza and a drink. School supplies will be distributed afterward.
Waldrop said anyone who would like to donate school supplies to GAP Fellowship Church can contact them at 256-215-3427.
