The Alexander City Kiwanis Club recently completed its commitment to give $50,000 to the Alexander City Schools Education Foundation.

The club presented the final check to ACSEF President Tommy Spraggins during Wednesday’s beginning of the school year convocation.

“We committed a $50,000 commitment over the course of five years, so we gave our last bit of that 50,000 commitment from the Alexander City Kiwanis,” Kiwanis member and past president Randy Dawkins said.

The club also recently gave a monetary donation to the Benjamin Russell High School Jazz Band and donated 362 bottles of water for the school system’s “S.O.S. for H2O” fundraiser for students who ride buses.

Dawkins and Kiwanis President Scott Blake said that, just this year, the club has given over $10,000 to the Alexander City School System.

“The Kiwanis motto is ‘serve the children of the world,’” Blake said. “With that being our motto, why not give to our local children in Alexander City? We appreciate all the support our community has for our Kiwanis Club. Without that, we wouldn’t be able to give this money to the schools.”

The club also heard from Salvation Army Director Susan Hardy this week during their weekly meeting at Central Alabama Community College.

Hardy recently returned home after being deployed in Tuscaloosa during the month of July as instant commander with the Salvation Army. She said the organization is now entering phase two of its relief efforts in Tuscaloosa.

“Now, a lot of things have died down and the people, their houses are beginning to get worked on, but there’s still a lot of help needed,” Hardy said. “We’re still out there serving the people and trying to take care of their needs until they can get back to somewhat of a normal routine.”

The Kiwanis Club meets every Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at CACC.

“We are looking for new members,” Dawkins said. “Come visit us.”
