Boy remains in hospital following boat accident

Published 7:44pm Tuesday, July 12, 2011

A 14-year-old boy remains hospitalized after a July 1 boat accident on Lake Martin.

Capt. Matt Brooks of the Alabama Marine Police declined to release the boy’s name and the nature of his injuries, but said he was seriously injured during the accident.

The juvenile was one of five people injured last week when a fiberglass runabout collided with a pontoon boat at about 9 p.m. near Sand Island in the Kowaliga area of Lake Martin. The other four victims have been released from the hospital, Brooks said, including Johnny Norris, 45, of Birmingham, who was driving the runabout, and Brittany Benton, 23, of Alexander City, who was driving the pontoon boat.

The names of the other people involved in the crash have not been released.

Brooks said the investigation into the crash is ongoing and the marine police have been interviewing witnesses and people involved in the accident this week.

“Right now, we’re right smack dab in the middle of it,” he said.

Brooks declined to say whether he expects charges to be filed or if alcohol was involved in the accident.
