Five injured in Lake Martin boat accident on Friday

Published 2:02pm Saturday, July 2, 2011

A boating accident on Lake Martin injured five people on Friday night.

Capt. Matt Brooks of the Alabama Marine Police said two people were “severely injured” and airlifted to Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery after a fiberglass runabout collided with a pontoon boat at approximately 9 p.m. near Sand Island in the Kowaliga area of Lake Martin.

“It was almost a head-on collision,” he said.

Another victim was taken by ambulance to Baptist South, while the other two injured people went by “private vehicle” to Russell Medical Center in Alexander City.

Of the injured, four were adults and one was a juvenile, Brooks said, but their names have not been released at this time. There were other people on the boats who were not injured during the accident.

Brooks declined to comment whether alcohol was involved in the accident, but said that the investigation is ongoing.

In addition to the Alabama Marine Police, the Elmore County Sheriff’s Department, Kowaliga Fire and Rescue and Russell Lands Police also responded to the accident.
