10 commandments never ruled out drinking
Published 6:01pm Friday, March 18, 2011Dear Editor,
I’m so glad that the AC Ministerial Association has chosen to weigh in on Mr. Boone’s editorial about bringing our alcohol laws into line with the rest of society. Like Mr. Boone, I have travelled extensively and don’t think these ministers and our public officials realize how ignorant, backward and parochial we look to “outsiders” who might otherwise choose to invest in this area. Mr. Boone’s editorial was all about bringing back economic prosperity to this area; not an endorsement of drinking alcohol. I think the ministers’ letter should be required reading for any investor or businessman foolish enough to waste his time and money on this dying town.
My review of “The Ten Commandments” did not reveal any divine ban on alcohol consumption, however, the shameful arrogance of these ministers stating that “selling alcohol on Sunday offends God” IS banned, to wit: “You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.” May He have mercy on your corrupt souls…
I continue to be amazed by the wisdom of our Founding Fathers, who knew over 200 years ago that to preserve the Liberty and Freedom of Americans, the Church needed to be kept out of the affairs of Government. Our ministers should take the hint and keep their “opinions” of what constitutes moral behavior to their pulpits. Ben Franklin was famously quoted as saying that “Beer is proof that God exists, and that He wants us to be happy.” Amen, Ben!
Sincerely,

Actually, Ben Franklin didn’t say that. He said “Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards; there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy.”
