ACPD seeks shooting suspect

The Alexander City Police Department is seeking an unidentified black male in connection with a shooting that occurred Wednesday night at a residence on Highway 63 South.

A 44-year-old white male was shot in the left leg after confronting a man who was apparently trying to steal something from his car on Wednesday around 8:30 p.m., said Lt. Fred Roth of the ACPD.

“When (the victim) walked outside, he noticed there was a light on in his car,” said Lt. Fred Roth. “He went over to check it out and there was a (man) in the vehicle.”

After the victim confronted the suspect, he realized he had a gun, Roth said. When the suspect tried to get out of the car, the victim grabbed him to try to prevent him from shooting.

“(The suspect) actually shot him in the left leg,” Roth said. “The (suspect) jumped out of the vehicle and ran from the scene.”

Roth said the ACPD canvassed the neighborhood and a canine unit tracked the man into the woods before his scent went cold.

Roth, who did not work the crime scene, said the victim described the suspect as a dark-skinned black male who was about 5’6” or 5’7”. The suspect did not have facial hair and was under 30.

“It was dark so the victim did not have a lot of information,” Roth said.

Roth declined to identify the victim because the investigation is ongoing.
