Minors face arson charges

Four minors, ranging in age from 10 to 14, will be charged with arson today in connection with a barn that was torched in New Site last weekend.

New Site Police Chief John McKelvey said on Thursday afternoon four New Site minors will be charged on Friday morning with burglary in the third degree, theft in the third degree, criminal trespass in the third degree and arson in the second degree.

McKelvey said he received a call from the New Site Volunteer Fire Department Saturday around 2:45 p.m. that the barn at the intersection of Cowpens Road and Crow Road was on fire.

McKelvey said one of the suspects told him they started the fire because they were cold.

“One of them took a match and lit a hay bale on fire and it kind of got out of hand from there,” he said.

McKelvey said several items the suspects apparently stole from a local residence and stored in the barn were also burned in the fire.

“There was a burglary of a residence on Cowpens Road,” he said. “Several items were taken. It was an old, abandoned rental type house.”
