New Site to get new store

Dollar General Corp. will open a store in New Site in the spring.

Mike Machak, communications specialist for Dollar General Corp., said the new store will be located on Highway 22 and should open in March.

Dollar General is a discount store that offers grocery items, home supplies and apparel.

Machak said he was uncertain how many people would be hired at the New Site store, but each Dollar General has a store manager, assistant manager and several clerks.

“It can vary depending on the store and the size anywhere between six and 10 people,” he said.

Several websites have listed a job opening for the manager’s position at the New Site store.

Machak said the store will have a “soft opening,” which will allow customers to begin shopping before the store’s grand opening to the public.

The New Site store is one of hundreds of Dollar Generals set to open in fiscal year 2011. Dollar General announced Monday that more than 6,000 jobs will be created after 625 new stores are built across the country. Once the expansion is complete, Dollar General will have a 38-state operating area.

“Bringing our model of convenience and value to more people in more states is an exciting opportunity for us,” Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO, said in a press release. “We believe the new communities and state we are entering will benefit from the new jobs, shopping choices and dedication to community found at Dollar General.”

In addition to the new stores, the company plans to model or relocate 550 stores, according to the press release.
