Daviston gears up for giving
Published 7:23pm Thursday, December 2, 2010The Good Samaritans are collecting items for their annual Christmas Giveaway to help low-income families.
Vivian Kirk, president of the Good Samaritans, said the annual event will be held Dec. 11 at the Daviston Community Center from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“This is our 11th annual event,” Kirk said.
Kirk said the Samaritans pray with attendees and ask them if they can help them look for things their family needs at the giveaway.
She said each child will receive a new toy and that Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and a few elves will even be at the event so children can get their picture taken with Santa.
Each family will also receive hot chocolate and cookies.
Kirk said the organization relies on donations of items such as clothes for children and adults, household items, toys and Christmas decorations that are in good condition from companies, churches and individuals for the giveaway.
“We’re still looking for newborn baby stuff,” Kirk said. “We had people call and ask us if we had stuff for girls, and we have some for boys but not for girls right now.”
Kirk said that last year they were able to assist a total of 88 local families and 143 children through the giveaway.
“We do this to help the families, but we’re the ones who really get the blessing,” Kirk said. “We have a ball.”
Kirk said items that are left over after the event will be donated to Faith Mission to help more people in need.
