Local unemployment rate holds at 12.1 percent

Tallapoosa County’s unemployment rate remained at 12.1 percent from September to October, according to numbers released Friday morning by the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations.

Tallapoosa’s civilian labor force dropped from 17,530 to 17,480 while the number of employed persons fell from 15,414 to 15,362. The number of unemployed persons increased by two people to 2,118.

Coosa County’s unemployment rate rose by one-tenth of a percent to 12.2. That means 547 people are unemployed, which is an increase of seven. The number of employed persons decreased by 11 to 3,891 while the overall civilian labor force also dropped by five people to 4,434.

However, the numbers are a significant improvement from last year, when the Tallapoosa County had a jobless rate of nearly 15 percent and Coosa Count had a 14.4 percent unemployment rate.
