The Town of Jackson’s Gap will advertise for a new police chief starting this week through the end of November.improvements
The council approved the measure during its November meeting Monday night.
The former chief, Kenny Sherrer, was hired on Aug. 5, 2009 and resigned earlier this month to take a job with the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department.
The city will have to advertise the position before interviewing applicants, according to acting Mayor Janice Canham.
“I will be asking for some help on that,” Canham told the council Monday. “I’m going to need help and input on that. And some input on what we want in an officer.”
In other business, the council approved a trip for Canham and the town clerk to Orange Beach for a grant-writing seminar. Canham said if a representative from the town did not attend, the town would no longer be allowed to write grants.
Canham also asked the council to consider reimbursing town clerk Kathleen Thomas for the seven months she worked as clerk before she was officially hired. The difference in pay would amount to $3.75 an hour, according to Canham.
Councilman Jeff Walker asked to table the issue until an exact figure could be announced.
“We’ve got a lot of stuff going on that may take money,” he said. “I’d like to see a figure first.”
