Jackson’s Gap mayor, police chief resignPublished 8:10pm Thursday, November 11, 2010
The town of Jackson’s Gap is currently without a mayor or a police chief.
Mayor J.D. Ayers and police chief Kenny Sherrer have both resigned their posts this week.
Ayers, who was first elected in 2004, said he turned in his letter of resignation to Town Hall at about 5 p.m. Wednesday. He said he resigned the position to spend more time at his full-time job in construction.
“I’m self-employed and the economy is getting really bad,” Ayers said Thursday morning. “I need to focus on my work more.”
Ayers was re-elected in 2008 and his resignation means Mayor Pro Tem Janice Canham will become mayor.
Sherrer said he resigned to take a job as an investigator with the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department, although Sheriff Jimmy Abbett would not confirm that.
“I was offered a position with the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department and I took it,” Sherrer said.
Sherrer was formerly chief deputy for the department and was hired as Jackson’s Gap police chief Sept. 14, 2009.
“I’m looking forward to going back to work for the sheriff’s department,” Sherrer said.
