Kiwanis club fulfilling its $50,000 pledge

Four years ago, the Kiwanis club of Alexander City pledged $50,000 to the Alexander City Schools Education Foundation over a five-year period. Although our community has faced job losses and a severe recession in the intervening years, a recent donation of $10,000 by the club has brought it to within $5,000 of the original goal with one year left to fulfill the commitment.

That’s no small achievement is this day and age.

According to Kiwanis board member Randy Dawkins, the club has given a total of $45,000 to the education foundation.

“We thought this would help them with the kids. The money we raise does stay local – 100 percent of it. We give about half our proceeds to the schools,” Dawkins said.

The education foundation is designed to equip our schools’ classrooms with computers and other modern technology to help prepare our children for the future. The funds donated by the Kiwanis club and other individuals and organizations will go a long way toward achieving that goal.

We want to thank the members of our local Kiwanis club for all their hard work and determination over the past four years. Not only have they given much needed funding to our local schools, but they have also provided a wonderful example of perseverance in difficult economic circumstances.
