Enterprise State fires Wesley Person

ENTERPRISE (AP) — Wesley Person has been fired as Enterprise State Community College’s men’s basketball coach.

The former Auburn and NBA player says he was fired Tuesday without an explanation by athletic director Jeffrey Coats. The firing is effective Aug. 20.

Person was preparing for his second season leading the men’s program after a year as an assistant women’s coach.

Coats was out of the office Thursday morning and unavailable for comment.

Person says he called the meeting with Coats to discuss his plans for the program after all 15 of his signees had arrived on campus.

Person says he went to Coats’ office on Wednesday morning to seek an explanation, but was told the AD was not available. He says Coats called him later in the day but declined to meet in person.

Carr, Holloway in limbo

Person had signed a full class, including picking up two Edward Bell stars from the Bears’ state championship roster.

Damien Carr, the Class 1A Player of the Year, and Armis Holloway, a forward who averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game, now have the option to stay or go, according to EBHS head coach Mitch Joiner.

“Right now, they’re just having to wait and see,” Joiner said. “The athletic director told them the school would honor their scholarships or they could leave without having to sit out.

“Both of them went to play for Person and learn from his experience. We’ll see what happens.”
