Benjamin Russell High School is getting a facelift for the new school year.

Alexander City Kiwanis Club President Tommy Lee said the club is working on power-washing all the concrete at the high school and repainting the handrails, fences and gates.

“This is our high school and we want it to look better,” Lee said. “It’s the first thing people see if they’re moving to the community so we wanted to put on a little better face … The appearance of the school really should match the quality of education.”

We’re just sprucing it up,” he added.

Lee said the endeavor is the club’s annual service project this year. He said past projects have included repainting and mulching the Imagination Station at the Sportplex.

“We started this evening and we’ll be coming back in the morning,” Lee said Friday. “We’ll be working on it as long as it takes, between now and the time school starts.”

Lee said the Kiwanis Club sponsors four major fundraisers per year: a steak auction, a pancake breakfast, a 5-star plantation skeet shoot and BBQ and a fair at the Sportplex.

“The bulk of our proceeds go to the Alexander City Education Foundation,” he said.
