Allan Cutts was not expecting to be named Lion of the Year for the Colonial Lions Club in Alexander City.

“It caught me as a surprise,” Cutts said. “No. 1, it’s just an honor to receive this award. I know there are so many people who did as much or even more than I did. It’s just been great to serve with everyone this year in the Lions Club.”

Skipper Worthy, last year’s recipient of the club’s top award, presented Cutts with the award Thursday night during the Colonial Lions Club’s Lion of the Year banquet at Cecil’s Public House. Worthy said Cutts has been extremely active in the club during the last year.

“He has worked so hard and has been at just about anything we’ve done,” Worthy said. “Allan has done so much for us over the last few years and he deserved this award.”

Cutts said the Colonial Lions Club is an active supporter of Alexander City and local charities. Some of the fundraisers the club holds each year include the Sea Doo Rumble and annual golf tournament.

Proceeds raised by the club go to fund organizations including the Gateway to Education Foundation, the Alexander City Schools Foundation and Camp ASCCA.

The Lions Club also helps families in need with eye examinations, vision appointments and purchasing glasses.

In addition to the Lion of the Year award, the club appointed new officers and board of directors. The new officers include president Scottie Gordon, first vice president Charles Ogles, second vice president Jerry O’Neil, secretary John Bailey and treasurer and tail twister Doug Hamrick.
