Published 9:38pm Tuesday, March 2, 2010The Alexander City Jazz Fest received its special event permit from the City Council of Alexander City Monday night.
The Jazz Fest Committee submitted an application to the council to grant approval for its annual event, this year set for Friday, July 1, from 6 p.m. to midnight. As usual, the committee has secured $1 million liability and property damage insurance policy for the festival.
The council also approved Jazz Fest’s request to suspend the open container policy for alcoholic beverages at the event.
In other business, the council waived business license fees for the Alexander City Kiwanis Club for its annual spring fair.
Mike Mixon was granted a restaurant retail liquor license for his new restaurant, Jake’s.
The council also amended its contract with RCC Atlantic, Inc., (d/b/a Verizon Wireless) to replace three antennas and add three antennas on the city’s checkerboard water storage tank on U.S. 280. There will now be 12 antennas on the water tank.
RCC Atlantic will pay $935 a month for the first five years. The cost will then increase 10 percent every five years.
Five people were appointed to the tree board. They are Sandra Thompson, Hugh Neighbors, Bob Howard, Barbara Barnes and Larry Bates. Thompson and Neighbors’ terms will be up in 2012 while Howard, Barnes and Bates will serve until 2013.
The terms current members Ray Peacock and Richard Wagoner will end later this year.
Councilman Gauis Dean also discussed with the council about the road closure at the Turtle Neck Pond. A city road is also the dam for the pond, but recent rainfall has damaged the road.
Dean said the city and the landowners are working on a solution to resolve the problem.
