40 marijuana plants seized
Published 11:43pm Thursday, September 17, 2009The Alabama Marijuana Eradication program netted three arrests and confiscated a total of 40 marijuana plants being grown near a Goodwater residence on Sept. 10, according to Coosa County Sheriff Terry Wilson.
Those arrested were 53-year-old Peggy Sue Hammonds, 65-year-old Roy Dean Hammonds and 22-year-old Roy Dean Hammonds Jr., all of 491 Old Ashland Road in Goodwater, all of whom were charged with possession of marijuana in the first degree in connection with the discovery.
The Alabama National Guard and the Coosa County Sheriff’s Department teamed up in a cooperative effort that combined both helicopters to spot the plants and ground crews to confiscate them, Wilson said.
“It was a good case,” Wilson said. “We were fortunate to find all of the plants in that one spot. It was a good hit.”
Wilson said each of the 40 confiscated plants had a street value of $2,000, putting the total street value at $80,000.
“It was a plus to get all of that out of here,” Wilson said. “Eradication is a yearly occurrence. It is gratifying to find and remove the marijuana plants.”
Wilson said during a search of the residence officers discovered marijuana being processed as well as other items of contraband. All three suspects have been released on $10,000 bonds.
Hammonds Jr. has been released on bond, while Hammonds Sr. is being held for $10,000 bond.
