25 more candidates qualify in final days
Published 12:00am Wednesday, July 16, 2008Town and city clerks from all around the Lake Martin area uttered sighs of relief in every city and town hall as the qualifying period for municipal elections came to an end, Tuesday.
City Clerk for Alexander City, Luise Hardman, saw many candidates qualify for the municipal elections on Aug. 26.
Incumbent Mayor Barbara qualified to run for re-election and will be challenged by Timothy Wayne Kellum.
Bill Young, Herbert Harrell and Bobby Tapley will on appear on the District One ballot for the City Council of Alexander City. Byron Donzel Lawson will challenge incumbent Lottie Wyckoff for the District Two council seat. Incumbent Glenn Thomas, who previously announced he would not run for re-election, qualified for the District Three council seat but will have opposition, as Randall Flournoy and Bob Howard will challenge for the seat.
Incumbent Skipper Worthy and challengers Ronda Blythe, Mark Fuller and Tillie Parks will contest the City Council District Four seat. Richard Langford will be the only incumbent to run without opposition, as he is the only candidate to qualify for the District Five council seat. Incumbent Lorenzo Grant, Mike Bice and Gaius Dean will compete for the District Six seat.
Hardman said the next step in the election process will be to order ballots for the Aug. 26 elections.
Dadeville will have four candidates for mayor with Joe Smith, Mike Ingram, Macarthur Moss and Tom Pemberton all qualifying for the election.
Incumbent Patricia Potts will be running unopposed for the District One City Council seat. District Two will see incumbent Mike Richardson and challengers Chapman Yarbrough and Roger Phillips all compete for the council seat. Jimmy Frank Goodman will run unopposed for the District Three seat.
Incumbent Charles Hunt and challenger Billy Monroe will contest the District Four seat, whereas District Five will see the incumbent Randy Foster compete will Wayne Smith for the seat.
The town of Kellyton had Jane Harris qualify for mayor with Ed Smith, Johnny Sharpe, Ronnie Joiner, Ed Jones and Donna Keel qualifying for five at-large council seats.
Leslie Wingler and Curtis Mims officially qualified for the office of mayor. Mickey Carter qualified for Town Council Place One. Michael East and Timmy Anderson qualified for Place Two. Loyd Cotney qualified for Place 3 and Linda Meadows qualified for Place Four. Barry Clarke qualified for Place Five.
Lonnie Cladwell, James Whetstone and Norman Davis will run for Mayor of Goodwater. Jerome Crayton will run for Place One on the town council. Robert Edwards qualified for Place Two and John Kelley will run for the Place Four seat. Stevenson Hoyett will run for Place Five. Lewis Goggans qualify for the council seat for Place Five and Robert Blaylock qualify for Place Four in week two of qualifying.
Incumbent Lonnie Caldwell qualified for mayor along with challenger James Whetstone in week two of qualifying.
Rockford will have two candidates run for mayor with both Randall Lewis and Michael Shaw qualifying for the position. Frankie Cousin qualified to run for the Town Council District One Place Two seat. Carel Smith will run for the District One Place One seat and Margie Lee will run for District Two Place One. Both Peggy Neshad and Karen Pemberton will run for the District One Place Three seat.
Interim Clerk for Rockford, Glenda Hardwell said she was relieved that qualifying had finally come to an end.
Daviston will have two men run for mayor as both Time East and Clifford Black have officially qualified. There will be no opposition for the town council members as there is only one candidate per district.
Jim Frank Spratland qualified for District One in Daviston, Lynn Fuderburk will run in District Two and Joe Clark will run in District Three. Kenneth Whitehead will run in District Four and District Five.
There is a race for mayor in Jackson’s Gap as incumbent J.D. Ayers will run against Chad Brooks and Cassie Keyes. Five council seats are up for grabs with Janice Canham, Dana Ford, Josh Patterson, Jeff Walker, Stephen Parrish, Margaret Kellum and Felicia Edwards all running for the town council.
Camp Hill Town Clerk Dorothy Woodall said qualifying went well in the town. The town will see a mayoral race with incumbent Sam Ellis running against Anthony Pogue. The town council will have no opposition as every incumbent qualified. Nathaniel Thomas qualified in Place One. Leon Hatcher qualified in Place Two. Donna Boyd qualified in Place Three. Robert Shelley qualified in Place Four and Gordon Keel qualified in Place Five.
