June 3 Superintendent race expected to be big
Published 12:00am Wednesday, May 14, 2008With the June primary approaching at a rapid pace all eyes are on one local race in particular this year. It is more than a primary election, with no republican opposition the race for Tallapoosa County School Superintendent, between the two democrats, Ginger East and Philip Baker will be decided on June 3, which may entice more individuals to be present at the polls.
“The Tallapoosa County Superintendent race will be a hot race,” said Roy Washburn from the Tallapoosa County Board of Registrars. “There will be people voting on the Democratic ticket just because of that race. Turnout for the Democratic side of the primary will be very good.”
Washburn hopes based on the numbers, that people will come out to vote.
“Based on the amount of applications, we have a whole bunch of new younger voters,” he said. “The number of voter registration applications coming in has been better this year then in previous election years.”
The registration deadline in order to be eligible to vote in the primary is May 24. In order to be eligible to register in Alabama an individual must be 18 years old by the time of the election, they must be a United States citizen, an Alabama resident and cannot have been convicted of a felony unless their rights were restored. A court must never have legally declared an individual “mentally incompetent” in order to vote.
