11-12 girls out pitch Tallassee in scrimmage

Richard Langford, head coach of the Alexander City 11- and 12-year-old All-Star softball team, goes by the motto, “Practice makes perfect.”

That is why he has scheduled a number of practice games before his team begins play in the Sub-District round of the state All-Star tournament.

The first of those games was played Thursday night when Alexander City hosted the team from Tallassee.

Alexander City won the game 3-1.

“I thought we did a good job of pitching tonight,” Langford said. “We have something that a lot of teams don’t have, and that is four good pitchers.”

While he was proud of the pitching, Langford said he was worried about his team’s hitting.

“We should have scored a few more than three runs against the pitching we faced tonight,” Langford said. “We just need to concentrate more on the pitch and pay more attention to what they’re throwing.

“I would’ve like to have seen us get a little bit more practice with fielding, but our pitching didn’t allow Tallassee to hit the ball to us that much.”

Langford said there are some high expectations for his team this year.

“Last year, we won the Sub-District and finished third in the District tournament,” Langford said. “We have eight girls playing this year who were on the team last year out of 12.”

The team will travel to Montgomery Saturday for two more practice games before the Sub-District begins in Opelika Thursday.
